Film review - Waitress

Waitress - this is a sweet film. Perfect for a Friday evening in when ideally a film should be too taxing but you don't necessarily want to watch an action blockbuster or run of the mill romantic comedy.
The story centres on Jenna, a waitress in a pie diner and her dissatisfaction with the turn her life has taken and being married to an awful man. She has discovered that she is pregnant and though this is an unwelcome event it pushes her in an unexpected direction.
Being set in small town America, it has all those lovely quirky moments that one would expect. My favourite visual moments are those when she is imagining a new pie in her head and the viewer is treated to the sight of various fillings being placed into a pie crust. All have unusual names like lonely in Chicago pie and provokes a strong desire to bake…or at the very least eat.
The film is perhaps slightly more poignant than it would normally have been as the writer/director Adreinne Shelly was sadly killed and this is the only the third film she directed. A real loss as this one showed much promise.
