I am a big fan of London Walks - http://www.walks.com/ - despite the name they do also run walks in other parts of the country but their main focus is on the capital.
Essentially these are themed guided tours around different part of London. Some focus on an area (I can especially recommend Old Kensington) or a subject Spies and Spycatchers, Oscar Wilde, The Beatles or Jack the Ripper (I'm waiting until it gets a bit more Autumnal and spooky before trying that one - it needs to be atmospheric!). There are also walks aimed at children
The full price adult ticket is £8 (concessions are available), so it would be quite an affordable thing to buy someone and, budget depending, you cold throw in lunch too!
There is no need to book - just check on the website as to where to meet for your walk of choice and pitch up.
