Book reveiw - Pop and Co - Scarlett Thomas

The blurb on this suggests that it will be much like it's predecessor - The End of Mr Y - and the story will be a mystery thriller, peppered with scientific references that will make your head spin.
There is a dose of mystery in the code breaking aspect of the book. The historical references to code creation are fascinating, though not having the most mathematical brain in the world, elements of it were way beyond my understanding and I ended up skim reading some of it. However, this doesn't detract from the surprising twist the theme of the book takes.
Ultimately Scarlett Thomas explores marketing toys for children and how the corporate grip on an industry can shape thinking and trends. There is also a passage describing the treatment of dairy cows, which, if true, would put me off drinking milk forever and I haven't quite been brave enough to investigate yet.
All in all this is an enjoyable and thought provoking read and more interesting as it took my expectations of the book and turned them in quite a different direction.
